Is catnip addictive for cats?
Catnip is not addictive. Unlike substances that cause dependence, catnip does not alter brain chemistry in a way that creates craving or compulsion. Cats don't seek it out obsessively or show distress when it's not available.
After a catnip session, cats simply move on — they groom themselves, rest, or find something else to do. There is no withdrawal period and no sign of dependency. The effect resets cleanly after about 30 minutes.
This is one reason catnip is considered a healthy, enriching treat for cats. Used in moderation, it provides stimulation and enjoyment with no long-term behavioural consequences.
