What is catnip?

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial herb from the mint family, originally native to Europe and Asia. It grows easily in most climates and has been cultivated for centuries — both for cats and for mild herbal remedies in humans.

The magic ingredient is nepetalactone, a natural compound found in the plant's leaves, stems, and seeds. When a cat sniffs catnip, nepetalactone binds to receptors in the nasal tissue and sends signals to the parts of the brain that control emotion and behaviour. The result is a burst of happiness — rolling, rubbing, vocalising, and playful antics that typically last 5 to 15 minutes.

After the session ends, cats become temporarily immune to the effect for roughly 30 minutes before their sensitivity resets.
