Is catnip safe for cats?

Yes, catnip is completely safe for cats in appropriate quantities. It is non-toxic, non-addictive, and the effects wear off naturally within 5 to 15 minutes.

The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) lists Nepeta cataria — the scientific name for catnip — as non-toxic to cats. It has been used safely by cat parents worldwide for generations.

The only scenario where catnip might cause mild discomfort is if a cat eats a very large amount — this can occasionally lead to temporary digestive upset like drooling or soft stools, which resolves on its own. A small pinch is all that's needed, so this is easily avoided.
