ShopFAQCatnip Guide

My cat becomes aggressive after catnip — is that normal?

While most cats respond to catnip with rolling, rubbing, and playful behaviour, a small number become overstimulated instead. They may hiss, growl, swipe, or appear temporarily irritable. This is an uncommon but known reaction and not a sign that anything is wrong with your cat.

If your cat reacts this way, calmly remove the catnip and give them space. Do not try to pet or pick them up while they are in this state. The effect will pass completely within 15 to 30 minutes.

In future sessions, try offering a significantly smaller amount — sometimes a fraction of a pinch is enough to produce a gentle, positive reaction without overstimulation. If your cat consistently responds negatively, it may simply be that catnip doesn't suit them, and that's perfectly fine.
